Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is considering the possibility of calling an early general election in April 2027, according to a report published on Tuesday by Il Giornale d’Italia.
The newspaper said the option of holding elections before the end of the current parliamentary term is being discussed within political circles in Rome.
According to the report, preliminary discussions have also involved the office of President Sergio Mattarella, who has the constitutional authority to dissolve parliament and call a general election.
The timing of Italy’s next budget law is reportedly one of the key factors being considered, with government officials also weighing the political implications of delaying the vote.
Speaking at a conference organised by the newspaper La Verità, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti suggested that an April election may not be feasible.
“Let me give you a piece of news … in order to complete the parliamentary passage, we cannot vote in April,” Giorgetti said.
