Canada has commended Pakistan’s “constructive role” in supporting diplomatic engagement and mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, which helped pave the way for the recent understanding between the two countries, according to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The statement came hours after Iran and the United States electronically signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which took immediate effect. Under the agreement, Iran reopened the Strait of Hormuz, while the US lifted its naval blockade as an initial confidence-building measure.
The acknowledgement was conveyed during a telephone conversation on Wednesday night between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand.
