An Indian military transport aircraf crashed on Saturday while attempting to land at an air force station in the country’s remote northeast, according to a statement from the Indian Air Force.
The Russian-made Antonov An-32 “met with an accident today while landing at Jorhat,” a city in Assam, the air force said.
Authorities did not provide details about casualties or the number of personnel on board at the time of the crash.
“A court of inquiry is being constituted to ascertain the cause of the accident,” the statement added.
Footage broadcast by showed a thick plume of black smoke rising from the crash site, with the aircraft appearing to have broken into several pieces.
The An-32 is a twin-engine turboprop transport aircraft designed for operations in high-altitude regions and extreme weather conditions.
