Over the past century, etiquette has been associated with physical spaces. It meant greeting someone politely, waiting for your turn to speak, or saying thank you and sorry to elders as well as younger people. These gestures helped people show consideration and respect for others.
Today, many of our conversations take place through screens. Messages and group chats have replaced physical gatherings and conversations, and video calls have replaced meetings. With this evolution of digital spaces, new kinds of etiquette have quietly developed. These may not be written in any books but can be observed in everyday interactions.
Let’s talk about the experience of being “left on seen.” Most online messaging platforms currently indicate when a message has been viewed. When someone reads a message but does not reply, even for understandable reasons, it creates a sense of unease. The silence feels intentional, and what might simply be a delayed response out of genuine reason can be interpreted as indifference and ignorance.
On the other hand, group chats have also developed their own set of expectations and rules. A message sent in a group, which is merely information, expects an acknowledgement. Some people respond immediately, some respond with emojis, while some prefer to mute the whole chat. These ways of response may seem small, but it reflects how included or ignored others feel in a digital community.
The trend toward online meetings has introduced another set of etiquette. Last week, in an online meeting on Zoom, I noticed most of the participants had their cameras off, leaving only blank squares and muted microphones. It was challenging for me to tell whether they were paying attention to my explanation or were distracted by other tasks. It is understandable that for some, keeping cameras off means privacy and comfort. However, for some, it indicates a lack of interest. The screens created distance where intentions can be misunderstood easily.
These examples show how digital interactions shape social relationships. A message left on sight, a delayed reply and a muted conversation can create a sense of indifference and lack of interest among individuals. Digital spaces have shortened the physical distance between individuals, but emotional distance has become greater due to misinterpreted intentions. What once seemed like small technical actions have gradually become signals of attention, respect, and presence.
From a cultural perspective, this shift reflects the evolution of communication. Societies rely on technology to stay connected and updated. As a result, expectations of quick responses and availability have grown stronger. People are expected to remain active in group chats so that they can respond quickly and promptly. The screens have become spaces where reputations and reliability are quietly observed. In short, we are being judged.
Digital etiquette is still evolving, day by day. Digital rules remain uncertain and flexible to change, unlike traditional rules that are passed down through generations and social norms. People are still learning and understanding personal boundaries with availability, politeness with privacy and maintaining connections with the need for silence.
Perhaps this is a challenge of living in an era shaped by digital screens. Although the spaces are virtual, the feelings they create are real. Behind every text and notification, there is a person waiting for a reply, hoping to be respected and heard. In the end, the etiquette of screens is less about technology but more about kindness and consideration for the person on the other end. Society needs to remember that, even in digital spaces, respect and availability still matter.
