Six Injured in Sewer Line Explosion in Rawalpindi’s Satellite Town

Jarida Report

On May 21, 2025, a sewer pipeline explosion occurred in Satellite Town, Rawalpindi, injuring six individuals. The incident, caused by gas accumulation in the pipeline, resulted in a large crater on the road connecting Holy Family Hospital Road with Phagwari Road, leading to significant traffic disruptions. Rescue 1122 responded promptly, transporting the injured to Holy Family Hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition.

Investigations revealed no gas leakage from the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) lines, suggesting the explosion was confined to the sewer system. The Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) clarified that the affected drain was not part of its designated network and lacked proper ventilation, having only a single grating. Wasa’s Managing Director, Saleem Ashraf, recommended that the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation remodel the drain to include ventilating manholes at regular intervals to prevent future gas build-up.

Residents expressed concerns over the incident, with some attributing it to potential use of substandard materials during recent road reconstruction. They urged authorities to expedite repairs and conduct thorough inspections to ensure the safety of utility lines in the area.
