Punjab’s New e-Gadget System: A Game Changer in Tracking and Recovering Stolen Mobile Phones

Jarida Report

The e-Gadget Monitoring System, developed by the Punjab Police in collaboration with the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), has emerged as a significant tool in combating mobile phone theft across Punjab. This system enables users to verify the status of mobile devices before transactions, thereby curbing the circulation of stolen phones.

A notable success of this initiative was observed in Lahore, where over 100 stolen mobile phones, including iPhones, were recovered using the e-Gadget app. These devices were subsequently returned to their rightful owners during a ceremony at the Lahore Investigation DIG office. The app’s effectiveness lies in its requirement for mobile phone traders to register and input the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers of devices they handle. This process creates a comprehensive database accessible to the police, facilitating the swift identification and recovery of stolen gadgets.

The system’s implementation has significantly disrupted the black market for stolen phones, which previously thrived due to the lack of an accessible database for verifying device legitimacy. By mandating traders to document device details and seller information, including photographs and CNIC numbers, the app ensures accountability and deters the sale of illicit goods. In instances where a device is reported stolen, the app promptly notifies the police, who can then take immediate action.

This initiative underscores the Punjab Police’s commitment to leveraging technology in enhancing public safety and streamlining law enforcement operations.
