PMA Demands Fair Probe into HIV Outbreak at Multan’s Nishtar Hospital

Jarida Report

The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Multan has expressed serious concerns over the inquiry into the HIV outbreak at Nishtar Hospital’s dialysis unit, calling for a transparent and impartial investigation. In an emergency meeting chaired by Prof. Dr. Masoodur Rauf Haraj, PMA members criticized the joint inquiry report for failing to address the fundamental question of how and why the HIV virus spread among dialysis patients. They alleged that the report appeared to target Nishtar Medical University’s first female vice chancellor as part of a retaliatory campaign, possibly influenced by a senior administrative officer aspiring to the VC position.

The PMA also highlighted that no action has been taken against unqualified medical practitioners operating in South Punjab, nor have officials from the Punjab AIDS Control Programme or Punjab Blood Transfusion Authority been held accountable. They pointed out that similar administrative negligence had previously led to over 100 HIV cases among children in Taunsa Sharif. Furthermore, recommendations from an initial committee formed by the Nishtar VC were ignored, resulting in no practical steps to improve HIV screening and treatment.

The association urged the Chief Minister and Governor to take notice of the issue and ensure a fair probe to uncover the truth.
