Action Recommended Against Nishtar Burn Centre Staff Over Rs15.7m Medicine Theft

Jarida Report

The Punjab government has taken disciplinary action against six officials of the Pak-Italian Burn Centre at Nishtar Hospital, Multan, following an inquiry into the theft of medicines valued at Rs15.7 million. The inquiry, led by Sargodha Division Commissioner Jahanzaib Awan and the Special Secretary of the Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education (SHC&ME) Department, South Punjab, was initiated by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

The investigation found that Dr. Syed Ali Mehdi, Additional Director/AMS of the Burn Centre, exhibited gross negligence by failing to prevent the theft, not installing CCTV cameras, and allegedly colluding with the perpetrators. As a result, he faces forfeiture of three years of service and is required to repay Rs1.923 million. Five other staff members—storekeeper Shoaib Hassan, security guards Muhammad Naeem, Imran Ali, Syed Farhan Ali, and electrical helper Amir Ahmad—were dismissed from service for their direct involvement in the theft, as evidenced by CCTV footage. Each is also mandated to repay Rs1.923 million.

The Chief Minister appointed Moazzam Iqbal Sipra, Managing Director of the Punjab Government Servant Housing Foundation, as the hearing officer to finalize penalties under the PEEDA Act. The accused have seven days to submit their defenses; failure to do so will result in ex parte decisions. Additionally, a recent appointment of Dr. Mehdi as Health CEO Multan was rescinded upon discovery of his involvement in the theft case.
