Aurat March Karachi Postponed Amid Escalating Tensions Between India and Pakistan

Jarida Report

The organizers of Aurat March Karachi have announced the postponement of this year’s march, originally scheduled for May 11 (Mother’s Day), due to the escalating conflict between India and Pakistan. The decision follows recent Indian airstrikes in Pakistan, resulting in civilian casualties, and Pakistan’s subsequent military response, including the downing of Indian jets and drones.

In a statement, the organizers emphasized that the current political climate poses significant safety and logistical challenges, particularly for marginalized communities such as women, trans, and non-binary individuals from working-class backgrounds. They highlighted that crises like these disproportionately impact these groups, citing fears of movement, potential violence, and increased surveillance associated with national security narratives.

While the march is postponed, the organizers stressed that their advocacy continues. They reaffirmed the urgency of their demands, including social security, access to reproductive healthcare, housing, labor protections, recognition of unpaid work, maternal care, and freedom from violence. Additionally, they called on the state to pursue a path of diplomatic resolution and peace, noting that war diverts attention and resources away from fundamental social services.

The annual Aurat March has been a cornerstone of feminist resistance in Pakistan since its inception in 2018, providing a platform for those often excluded from mainstream discourse. The organizers concluded their statement with a message of solidarity: “We want to tell you that the feminist work, and the fight for our rights will not take a back seat as we wait for peace to prevail,” offering “feminist pyaar and salam” to all who contributed to this year’s campaign.
