On May 8, 2025, Pakistan’s military announced that it had shot down 25 Israeli-made Harop drones launched by India into Pakistani territory. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) described the drone incursion as a “cowardly attack” and an “extreme act of provocation,” suggesting it was a reaction to India’s recent losses, including the downing of five of its fighter jets and casualties among its soldiers.
The drones were intercepted across multiple locations in Pakistan, including Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Attock, and Bahawalpur. Debris from the drones was collected from these areas, and images were presented during an ISPR press briefing. The ISPR stated that Pakistan’s air defense systems effectively neutralized the threat using both electronic countermeasures and kinetic responses.
This incident follows a series of escalating military engagements between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, sparked by an attack in Indian-administered Kashmir on April 22, which India attributed to Pakistan-based militants. In response, India conducted airstrikes targeting alleged militant camps in Pakistan, leading to civilian casualties. Pakistan’s military has vowed to respond at a time and place of its choosing, raising concerns about further escalation.
The use of Israeli-made Harop drones by India marks a significant development in the conflict, introducing advanced loitering munitions into the regional theater. These drones are designed to hover over targets and strike upon identification, posing a new challenge for air defense systems. Pakistan’s successful interception of these drones demonstrates its evolving capabilities in countering such threats.
The international community has expressed concern over the escalating tensions, urging both nations to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue to prevent a broader conflict. The situation remains volatile, with both sides maintaining heightened military readiness.
