UK Plans Visa Restrictions for Pakistani Students Amid Asylum Concerns

Jarida Report

The UK government is considering restricting student visa applications from countries like Pakistan, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka, where nationals are reportedly more likely to claim asylum after arriving on work, student, or visitor visas. This initiative aims to reduce net migration, which reached 728,000 in the year ending June 2024. In 2024, out of 108,000 asylum claims, 16,000 were from individuals who initially entered the UK on student visas. The forthcoming Immigration White Paper will detail strategies to address these concerns .

The Home Office, collaborating with the National Crime Agency, plans to implement profiling models to identify potential asylum claimants before they enter the UK. This includes scrutinizing applicants’ bank statements and other indicators to detect patterns suggestive of future asylum claims .

These proposed measures have sparked criticism from legal experts and refugee advocates, who argue that targeting specific nationalities may be discriminatory and could overlook genuine protection needs arising from changing political conditions in applicants’ home countries .

In response to the increasing number of Pakistani nationals seeking asylum abroad, the Pakistani government has decided not to issue passports or renew existing ones for these individuals. Additionally, their national identity cards will be blocked, a move aimed at bolstering national security .

These developments may significantly impact Pakistani students and professionals aspiring to study or work in the UK, potentially leading to stricter visa scrutiny and limitations on future immigration opportunities.
