On April 17, 2025, Pakistan and Hungary signed an agreement to mutually lift visa requirements for diplomatic passport holders, marking a significant enhancement in their bilateral relations. This development occurred during Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó’s one-day visit to Islamabad, where he met with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
In addition to the visa waiver, the two nations signed memorandums of understanding to bolster cooperation in culture and archaeology. Szijjártó highlighted the doubling of trade between Hungary and Pakistan and acknowledged the completion of Hungarian-led projects in food security and water management within Pakistan. He also announced that Hungary offers 400 scholarships annually to Pakistani students.
Szijjártó praised Pakistan as a reliable partner and expressed support for the extension of Pakistan’s GSP+ trade status beyond 2027. He commended Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts and emphasized the importance of mutual respect and dialogue in international politics. Dar, in turn, reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to collaborating with Hungary in sectors such as agriculture, energy, healthcare, information technology, and industrial manufacturing.
