On the night of April 12, 2025, two young men, Zaid Ali and Noor Mohammed Aslam, lost their lives when a trailer truck struck their motorcycle at the New Chali roundabout in Karachi. The victims, residents of Edu Lane in Lyari, were en route from Techno City via Altaf Husain Hali Road when the incident occurred. Police arrested the driver, Abid Ali, and impounded the vehicle. An FIR has been registered under Section 320 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
This tragedy is part of a disturbing trend in Karachi, where heavy vehicle accidents have surged. In 2024 alone, nearly 500 people were killed and 4,879 injured in such incidents. The rise in fatalities has led to public outrage, with mobs torching heavy vehicles involved in accidents. In response, the Sindh government has formed a fact-finding committee to investigate the causes behind these increasing traffic accidents.
Political leaders, including those from the MQM-P and ANP, have condemned the incidents, attributing them to administrative failures rather than ethnic tensions. They have called for immediate reforms and compensation for victims’ families.
