5.8-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Japan’s Chiba Prefecture, No Tsunami Warning Issued

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s Chiba Prefecture on Friday, shaking areas near Tokyo but causing no tsunami threat, according to Japanese authorities and the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the quake occurred at 12:46 p.m. local time with its epicentre in Chiba Prefecture at a depth of about 50 kilometres.

The agency recorded a maximum seismic intensity of 4 on Japan’s seven-level scale and confirmed there was no risk of a tsunami.

The USGS also measured the earthquake at magnitude 5.8, locating its epicentre about 4 kilometres south-southeast of Yokoshiba at a depth of 56 kilometres.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage, authorities said.
