US President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned that the United States would target Iranian infrastructure if Tehran attacks commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said Washington would respond to any Iranian attack on commercial vessels by striking a bridge or power plant inside Iran.
“From this point forward, any time the Islamic Republic of Iran shoots at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, whether it be by Missile, Rocket, Drone, or any other device or weapon, the United States will bomb and destroy ONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT, including those located next to, or in, the Capital City of Tehran,” Trump wrote.
The warning comes as the United States continues military strikes across Iran that began last week. Tehran has responded with attacks on facilities and bases it says are used by the US military in several countries across the region.
The exchange of strikes has continued despite a Pakistani-brokered framework agreement signed by the United States and Iran in June, which was intended to end the conflict that began in February and pave the way for a broader peace agreement.
