A tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, causing a small fire and temporary power outage aboard the vessel, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
UKMTO said the vessel’s master reported that the tanker was hit at 1122 GMT while making an outbound transit through the strategic waterway.
The impact caused a small fire and blackout aboard the tanker, but the crew subsequently extinguished the blaze and restored the vessel sufficiently for it to continue its journey.
No casualties or environmental damage were reported, UKMTO said.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. The source and nature of the projectile were not immediately known.
UKMTO advised ships operating in and around the Strait of Hormuz to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes, particularly for global energy supplies, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
