ISLAMABAD/NEW YORK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to address the 81st United Nations General Assembly on September 25, with Pakistan’s attempts to encourage a negotiated end to the US-Iran war expected to feature prominently in his speech.
The UN General Assembly formally opened its new session in New York this week. The high-level debate will run primarily from September 22 to 26, with an additional sitting on September 28. US President Donald Trump is expected to address world leaders on the opening day.
Pakistan has repeatedly called for a diplomatic settlement to the six-month conflict and has maintained contacts with both Washington and Tehran. The war and its effects on Gulf security, shipping and energy supplies are expected to dominate considerable discussion during the gathering.
The attendance of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has not yet been confirmed. The session will also coincide with deliberations surrounding the UN mechanism monitoring sanctions related to Iran.
