Rising Temperatures Trigger Over 3,000 Glacial Lakes, Threatening Millions in Pakistan

Jarida Report

Over 3,000 glacial lakes have formed in Pakistan due to rising temperatures, with 33 posing serious risks of sudden floods. Around 7.1 million people, especially in Gilgit-Baltistan and KP, are vulnerable. Pakistan has already faced 75 glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). Rainfall has also declined by 40%, worsening water scarcity. In response, the government has launched early warning systems, climate resilience projects, and glacier conservation strategies to address the growing threats of climate change and protect downstream communities.
