Iran this month deployed Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders, military advisers and missile- and drone-related equipment to Yemen, according to multiple sources, in a move that could strengthen the capabilities of the Houthi movement in the Red Sea.
According to four sources familiar with the matter, including two Iranian sources, Yemen’s information minister and a regional security analyst, the personnel and equipment were transported on a Mahan Air flight from Tehran to Yemen on July 13.
The two Iranian sources told Reuters that between 10 and 21 IRGC personnel, including senior commanders, were on board the flight.
The aircraft was initially bound for the Houthi-controlled capital, Sanaa, but was diverted to the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah after Sanaa airport came under attack by forces aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognised, Saudi-backed government.
One source said the IRGC commanders were sent to support Houthi military operations and provide training on new missile systems. The source also alleged that gold was transported on the aircraft to help finance Houthi activities.
The Iranian sources spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns.
The reported deployment provides fresh indication of Tehran’s alleged support for the Houthis, who have been fighting Yemen’s internationally recognised government for more than a decade and have carried out missile and drone attacks against regional targets, including commercial shipping.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately comment on the report. Tehran has repeatedly denied supplying the Houthis with missile capabilities or providing direct military assistance.
