Two ancient-style statues were discovered on Friday during restoration work at Lea Market in Karachi’s Old City Area, prompting authorities to begin an assessment of their historical significance.
The statues were uncovered while excavation work was being carried out by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) as part of an ongoing restoration project. Officials said both artefacts appear to be in remarkably good condition.
In a post on social media, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the statues had been moved to a secure location and that experts would examine them to determine their age, authenticity and historical importance.
He added that cultural authorities had been contacted to assess whether the artefacts resembled any previously discovered historical objects.
The mayor said excavation at the site would continue with caution to ensure that any additional artefacts are preserved.
He added that scientific analysis would be carried out to establish the origin and significance of the statues, while various government departments would jointly oversee the investigation.
The KMC said further details would be shared with the media once the assessment is completed.
