Qatar Pauses LNG Expansion After Tanker Attack Near Hormuz

Jarida Report

Qatar has paused plans to rapidly increase production at the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility after an attack on one of its tankers near the Strait of Hormuz raised security concerns, according to a Bloomberg report.

Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported that QatarEnergy Chief Executive Saad Al-Kaabi ordered a temporary halt to the planned production increase at the Ras Laffan complex following emergency meetings held after Tuesday’s attack.

For safety reasons, operations at the facility will remain at minimum levels, while the number of LNG vessels scheduled to dock at the plant in the coming days will also be reduced.

The decision marks one of the most significant impacts on the global energy sector since renewed tensions erupted around the Strait of Hormuz, following attacks on commercial vessels and two consecutive days of US airstrikes on Iran.
