LAHORE: The Punjab government has approved new safety procedures for sanitary workers following concerns over accidents during sewerage-cleaning operations, according to ARY News.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the comprehensive standard operating procedures (SOPs), making protective measures mandatory for workers involved in sewer maintenance.
The guidelines were formulated by a committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary Iftikhar Ali Sahoo to reduce risks and prevent workplace accidents.
Under the new rules, manholes cannot be opened or approached without first checking for toxic gases. Workers are also prohibited from entering manholes without assessing gas levels.
The SOPs require sanitary workers to wear appropriate protective clothing and equipment. Safety barricades, warning boards and traffic signs must also be installed around work sites.
In addition, jetting and suction machines may only be operated by trained personnel. Entry into manholes will require prior authorisation under a mandatory permit-to-work system.
