Paraguay and Morocco produced major upsets at the FIFA World Cup, eliminating Germany and the Netherlands in penalty shootouts after both Round of 32 matches ended 1-1 following extra time.
Germany’s hopes of a deep tournament run ended in a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay, marking the four-time champions’ first-ever World Cup loss on penalties after winning their previous four shootouts.
Later, Morocco defeated the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after another 1-1 draw. The Dutch had taken the lead in the 72nd minute through Cody Gakpo, who dedicated the goal amid personal tragedy following the death of his newborn son last week.
Morocco equalised in stoppage time through Issa Diop, forcing extra time before holding their nerve in the shootout to book their place in the last 16.
