Palestinian Flag Raised Outside German Parliament as Activists Protest Berlin’s Israel Policy

Jarida Report

Pro-Palestinian activists replaced a German national flag with a Palestinian flag outside the country’s parliament on Sunday in protest against the government’s support for Israel and its response to the war in Gaza.

The activist organisation Peacefully Against Genocide claimed responsibility for the demonstration, describing it as an act of solidarity with Palestinians and a protest against what it considers the German government’s failure to respond adequately to serious human rights violations in Gaza.

In a statement, the group accused political leaders of remaining silent about, enabling or supporting actions it characterised as genocide against Palestinians.

Aaron, a member of the organisation, said governments that fail to oppose such actions do not represent the interests of their citizens.

“No matter where in the world a genocide is committed, it affects us all,” he said. “We must not shirk our responsibility to stop crimes against humanity.”

The activist also invoked Germany’s historical commitment to preventing atrocities, questioning whether that principle was being upheld in its current foreign policy.

“What does international law mean if governments do not abide by it? What are human rights worth if they do not apply to everyone?” he asked.

“When a living hell becomes reality, we as civil society must embrace our responsibility and take a stand for freedom and for the lives of all,” he added.

Berlin police confirmed that three activists were arrested at the scene. Authorities have opened an investigation on suspicion of insulting the state and its official symbols.

The organisation announced plans for further demonstrations in the coming days, focusing on Germany’s continued military support for Israel.

Its demands include an immediate halt to weapons deliveries to Israel by German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall and the closure of the company’s Berlin facility.

The flag replacement and arrests come amid continuing protests over Germany’s policy towards Israel and the conduct of the war in Gaza.
