Pakistan is set to appoint Mike Smith as the batting coach of the national Test team ahead of this month’s three-match Test series against England, according to media reports.
Smith, a Level 4-qualified coach and former South African first-class cricketer, has previously worked with Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), giving him experience within Pakistan’s cricket setup.
According to the reports, Smith is expected to take over the role, subject to the completion of the appointment process.
Former Pakistan batter Asad Shafiq has served as the team’s interim batting coach since April 2026, after joining the support staff under Test head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed.
Pakistan will begin the three-match Test series against England at Headingley, Leeds, from August 19-23. The second Test will be played at Lord’s from August 27-31, while the series concludes at Edgbaston, Birmingham, from September 9-13.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) began its search for a permanent batting coach in May, inviting applications before closing the process on June 7. The board has since been evaluating candidates.
If confirmed, Smith’s appointment will bolster Pakistan’s coaching staff ahead of a crucial Test tour of England, where the team will be looking to strengthen its batting performance.
Pakistan are currently touring the West Indies, where they trail the two-match Test series 1-0, with the second and final Test underway at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain.
