No date or venue has been finalised for the resumption of direct talks between the United States and Iran, despite US President Donald Trump’s announcement that negotiations would begin on Monday, Pakistani government sources told Anadolu.
A senior Pakistani official said no meeting between US and Iranian negotiators was scheduled in Islamabad, at least over the next 24 hours.
According to the sources, Pakistan and Qatar are continuing mediation efforts and remain in contact with both Washington and Tehran to agree on a date and venue for the next round of talks.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei also said on Monday that Tehran was not currently engaged in negotiations with the United States.
The sources said Islamabad and Doha remain the leading candidates to host the talks.
They added that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is expected to visit Tehran within the next few days to discuss efforts to revive the negotiations, although his office has not commented publicly.
According to the sources, positive developments are expected later this week as both sides continue exchanging messages through mediators in an effort to revive negotiations under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, signed on June 17.
The memorandum committed both countries to pursuing a permanent settlement on several contentious issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme, within 60 days, although recent hostilities have cast doubt over the process.
The sources added that any renewed engagement is expected to begin with indirect talks through mediators, with the nuclear issue not expected to feature in the initial phase of direct negotiations.
