At least one person was killed and 11 others, including two police officers, were injured after a car bomb exploded outside a police station in northeastern Colombia, authorities said Tuesday.
The explosive device had been concealed inside a vehicle parked near the Los Patios police station in Cucuta, close to Colombia’s border with Venezuela, and detonated late Monday, the National Police said.
Nine civilians and two police officers were wounded in the blast, which caused extensive structural damage to the station and destroyed several vehicles and motorcycles in the surrounding area.
Authorities have not yet identified any group as responsible for the attack, and no organisation has publicly claimed responsibility.
President Abelardo de la Espriella said he had convened an emergency meeting following the bombing as authorities assessed the security situation.
“Colombia will not kneel before terrorism,” the president said in a statement on X.
Police have launched an investigation into the bombing, including efforts to determine who prepared and positioned the vehicle and whether the attack was linked to armed groups operating in the region.
Cucuta and surrounding areas of Norte de Santander, along the Venezuelan frontier, have long faced security challenges involving armed organisations and criminal networks competing for control of territory and trafficking routes.
