KARACHI: Police are investigating the death of a 36-year-old woman whose body was found in a residential flat in Defence Phase 8 on Monday, with her husband and family providing further information to investigators.
The deceased was identified as Shumaila. According to preliminary police findings, she was suspected of having died by suicide after severing the tendons behind her knees. Her body was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for a post-mortem examination and necessary legal formalities.
In a subsequent development, police said Shumaila’s husband told investigators that she had injected a boil on her wrist. Her family also informed police that she had been experiencing mental health difficulties.
South SSP Mahzoor Ali said the woman’s brother had declined to pursue legal action in the case. However, police had launched an inquiry to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.
Meanwhile, police have detained several workers for questioning in connection with the deaths of an elderly couple found inside their home in North Karachi’s Sir Syed area.
According to police sources, a carpenter, a plumber and a painter had been working at the property. The plumber had completed his work, while the carpenter and painter were still engaged in renovation work.
Investigators have recorded statements from the workers, relatives and neighbours as part of the inquiry. Police have also obtained CCTV footage from the surrounding area, although the footage showing people entering and leaving the house is reportedly unclear.
A mobile phone recovered from the residence has been sent for forensic examination. Police are also seeking information from family members travelling from Canada, with the couple’s children expected to arrive in Karachi by Tuesday, according to police.
Post-mortem findings revealed severe head injuries to both victims, identified as Muhammad Yamin, aged between 65 and 70, and his wife, Nafis Akhtar, aged between 60 and 65.
According to the police surgeon, both victims had sustained deep head injuries. Investigators suspect they were attacked with a heavy, blunt object, while efforts to identify those responsible and establish the motive continue.
