Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan pledged on Friday to intensify efforts against terrorism and extremism following a deadly attack on police officers in the capital that left one officer dead and another injured.
In a statement posted on X, Hassan paid tribute to Corporal Jawad al-Salayta, who was killed while performing his duties on Thursday, and extended condolences to his family. He also wished injured officer Firas al-Ananzeh a swift recovery.
“Jordan’s battle against terrorism and extremism continues,” the prime minister declared, reaffirming the government’s determination to confront threats to national security and social stability.
“We will strike with an iron fist the dens of extremists and terrorists and everyone who cooperates with them,” he added.
The remarks came as thousands of mourners gathered on Friday to attend al-Salayta’s funeral. Deputy King Prince Faisal bin Al Hussein was also present at the ceremony.
According to Jordan’s Public Security Directorate, the incident occurred on Medina Street in Amman on Thursday when an assailant unexpectedly attacked al-Salayta with a sharp weapon.
A police patrol intervened and managed to arrest the suspect, but the officer commanding the patrol sustained facial injuries during the confrontation.
Authorities confirmed that the injured officer was in stable condition, while al-Salayta succumbed to his wounds after being transported to a hospital.
The Public Security Directorate said an investigation had been initiated to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
Preliminary findings suggested that the suspect had deliberately planned an act of terrorism targeting Public Security personnel.
Officials have not yet disclosed further details about the suspect or any possible accomplices as investigations continue.
