India and Australia on Thursday signed an agreement to facilitate Australian uranium exports to India, as the two countries pledged to deepen cooperation in defence, security and clean energy.
The agreement was signed during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Melbourne for talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. In a joint statement, the leaders welcomed the administrative arrangement under the 2015 Australia–India Nuclear Cooperation Agreement, which will enable uranium exports for India’s civilian nuclear energy programme.
The statement said the arrangement would help India expand its non-fossil fuel power capacity while providing “an additional market for the Australian resources sector.”
Speaking after the meeting, Albanese said: “We look forward to becoming a reliable, trusted supplier of uranium to India.”
