A former associate of slain Taliban commander Mullah Nazir was killed and another man injured after unidentified gunmen opened fire on their vehicle in South Waziristan, police said.
The attack took place on Saturday evening near a cemetery in Dogg, Wana tehsil, as Muhammad Khalid and Noor Ghulam were travelling home from Rustom Bazaar.
According to police and rescue officials, gunmen opened fire on the vehicle, leaving both men wounded.
Wana Circle Deputy Superintendent of Police Asghar Ali Shah said Khalid sustained critical injuries and was initially given medical treatment.
“He was given medical treatment and was being taken to Dera Ismail Khan for further treatment when he died from his injuries en route,” Shah said.
Noor Ghulam was taken to District Headquarters Hospital Wana, where he remained under treatment, hospital officials said.
Police sources said Khalid had previously been affiliated with the Mullah Nazir group and had worked as one of the slain commander’s associates.
Police have registered an initial report and launched an investigation into the shooting.
Authorities said investigators were examining different aspects of the attack, while efforts were underway to identify and arrest those responsible.
