Flash Floods Displace 63 Families, Damage 130 Homes in Sudan

Jarida Report

Flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall have displaced 63 families and damaged 130 homes in South Kordofan and North Darfur, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Sunday.

In Al-Atafa village in South Kordofan’s Al-Tadamon locality, flooding displaced 49 families, completely destroyed 49 homes and partially damaged another 38, according to the UN agency.

The affected families have taken refuge in temporary shelters in open areas within the same locality.

Flooding also struck Kabkabiya locality in North Darfur, where 14 families were displaced on Thursday. The IOM said 14 homes were destroyed and another 29 shelters sustained partial damage.

Sudanese authorities have not yet commented on the reported destruction.

Sudan’s rainy season typically lasts from June until October, with heavy downpours frequently causing floods across different parts of the country.

The latest flooding is adding to an already severe humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began in April 2023.

The war has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced around 13 million, according to UN and international estimates.
