At least 39 people have been killed and nine remain missing after severe flooding swept through southern China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, where heavy rains also caused a reservoir to breach, authorities said on Thursday.
The breach occurred at the Liulan Reservoir in the regional capital, Nanning, prompting large-scale search, rescue and relief operations. State media said emergency teams remain deployed across the affected areas.
The flooding is part of a wave of extreme weather that has battered several parts of China in recent days, triggering torrential rain, landslides and widespread flooding.
In a separate incident, at least 21 people were killed in a landslide in Gansu province earlier this week. Local media also reported that nearly 900 snakes escaped from a farm in Guangxi after floodwaters caused its enclosure walls to collapse.
