China on Thursday renewed its call for the United States and Iran to halt hostilities and return to negotiations, expressing deep concern over the escalating conflict.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Beijing was “gravely” concerned by the situation and warned that military confrontation would only worsen tensions.
He said renewed military action would not address the underlying issues and stressed that the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of countries in the region must be respected.
“The sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of regional countries should be respected and safeguarded,” Lin said, urging all sides to cease military operations, resume dialogue and negotiations, support mediation efforts and work towards an early ceasefire.
Lin added that China had remained in contact with relevant parties, including Iran, since the conflict began and had been working to promote peace talks.
