Britain Removes Consulate Signs In East Jerusalem As Shutdown Deadline Expires

Jarida Report

JERUSALEM: Workers removed signs and plaques from Britain’s consulate in East Jerusalem overnight after Israel ordered it closed by Thursday, Reuters reported.

The move follows Britain’s sanctions on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including a ban on goods produced there.

The consulate’s British flag remained flying, while its closure is expected to affect around 30 British diplomats and their families.

Britain’s embassy in Tel Aviv, which handles diplomatic relations with Israel’s government, will remain unaffected.

The East Jerusalem consulate has served Britain’s relations with Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza for nearly 200 years.
