China Strengthens Latin America Ties as Trump Increases Pressure

Jarida Report

Chinas Foreign Minister Wang Yi has pledged to strengthen ties with Latin America, positioning China as a reliable partner in a region traditionally influenced by the United States. In discussions with Bolivian Foreign Minister Celinda Sosa at the United Nations, Wang emphasized Chinas commitment to elevating its strategic partnership with Bolivia. This move comes as U.S. President Donald Trump adopts a more assertive stance in Latin America, pressuring nations to limit their engagements with China. For instance, Panama recently withdrew from Chinas Belt and Road Initiative following U.S. demands. Additionally, Trump has cautioned BRICS members against challenging the U.S. dollars supremacy, threatening substantial tariffs. In response, Brazil has halted plans for a common currency to avoid potential U.S. economic repercussions. These developments highlight the intensifying geopolitical competition between the U.S. and China in Latin America.
