Barrister Salman Safdar, representing former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi, has submitted an affidavit to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) expressing serious concerns about Bushra’s deteriorating eyesight and the medical treatment available to her at Adiala Jail.
The affidavit, filed on Saturday in connection with the £190 million case, details Safdar’s meeting with the incarcerated couple earlier this week after several months without access.
According to the lawyer, prison authorities informed him on October 31 that a meeting had been arranged for November 2 at 3:30pm. The meeting eventually began at 4pm and continued for approximately 40 minutes.
Safdar stated that Bushra was wearing unusually dark sunglasses during the meeting. When she removed them at his and Imran Khan’s request, her eyes appeared to be in an “extremely vulnerable condition”.
The lawyer said Bushra complained of severe sensitivity to both natural and artificial light, explaining that she was unable to open her eyes without the protective glasses.
Safdar expressed concern that her vision had been significantly affected, adding that Imran Khan also appeared visibly distressed by his wife’s condition.
According to the affidavit, Bushra told her lawyer that doctors who had examined her in prison had diagnosed her with a mature cataract and indicated that another eye operation would be necessary around November 15.
The reported diagnosis and proposed surgery were conveyed by Bushra and have not been independently confirmed in the account.
Safdar further stated that Bushra complained about inadequate cleanliness inside the prison and expressed dissatisfaction with the medical care she was receiving.
She requested permission to undergo examination and treatment by doctors of her own choosing rather than relying exclusively on prison medical arrangements.
The lawyer said he assured Bushra that her concerns would be formally brought before the court.
The affidavit follows renewed demands from PTI leaders for improved medical access and treatment arrangements for the imprisoned former prime minister and his wife.
