ROME: Demonstrations over war and rising living costs turned violent in Turin, Rome and Bologna on Saturday, as Italian police increased security following unrest in several cities the previous weekend.
Authorities deployed a heavy police presence across the country to prevent further violence, while numerous shops shut their doors as a precaution against potential damage.
In Milan, however, demonstrations remained largely peaceful. Reuters reporters observed no incidents of looting or property damage during the protests.
The demonstrations followed violent confrontations the previous weekend, when protesters clashed with police, looted shops and vandalised property in multiple Italian cities.
Security measures were subsequently strengthened as authorities sought to contain further unrest amid continued public demonstrations.
