Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was admitted to hospital on Friday after collapsing while observing a training session involving the German club’s reserve team, according to a statement from Bayern.
The 40-year-old Belgian required medical assistance following the incident and was taken to hospital for further examinations.
The club confirmed that Kompany would remain under medical supervision while doctors assessed his condition. His coaching staff will temporarily assume responsibility for training sessions and matches until further notice.
Bayern Prioritises Kompany’s Recovery
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl expressed the club’s support for the manager and emphasised that his recovery would take precedence over footballing responsibilities.
“The health of Vincent Kompany is our highest priority,” Eberl said.
“We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to help him recover quickly. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs,” he added.
Recent Illness Had Disrupted Coaching Duties
Kompany had reportedly been struggling with a viral infection in recent days, forcing him to miss training sessions and a pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League encounter with Arsenal.
Despite the illness, he returned to the touchline for Bayern’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal.
Following the match, the Belgian manager acknowledged that he had disregarded warning signs from his body while attempting to continue working through the infection.
However, Bayern have not disclosed the cause of Friday’s collapse, and it remains unclear whether the incident was connected to his recent illness.
The club has also not announced a possible date for his return to managerial duties.
Bayern Prepare for Freiburg Clash
The incident comes as Bayern Munich continue their Bundesliga campaign from the top of the league standings.
The German champions are scheduled to travel to Freiburg on Sunday, although Kompany’s involvement remains uncertain.
For now, Bayern’s coaching staff will oversee preparations and matchday responsibilities while the club awaits further medical assessments of its head coach.
