A nine-hour power outage at the Dhabeji pumping station caused a shortfall of around 100 million gallons in Karachi’s water supply on Sunday, according to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC).
A KWSC spokesperson said the disruption began at around 6am after a cable fault in K-Electric’s system caused a major breakdown at the pumping station.
The prolonged power failure affected pumping operations and partially disrupted water supplies to different parts of Karachi. According to the spokesperson, the reduced pumping capacity had resulted in a water shortfall of approximately 100 million gallons.
K-Electric had begun work to reconnect the affected cable, the KWSC said.
The spokesperson said the affected pumps at Dhabeji would be restarted immediately after electricity was restored, allowing water supplies to Karachi to gradually return to normal.
The KWSC stressed that restoration of electricity at the pumping station was essential for the affected pumps to resume operations and for Dhabeji’s normal water supply to the city to be restored.
