KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution calling on the federal government to abolish the petroleum levy, as opposition to rising fuel prices continues to grow across Pakistan.
The resolution was moved by Jamaat-i-Islami lawmaker Muhammad Farooq, whose party is currently staging protests and sit-ins against fuel prices. Sindh Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar supported the resolution but noted that the levy is imposed by the federal government and cannot be removed by the provincial administration.
The vote comes after the federal government raised petrol by Rs12.90 per litre, bringing its price to Rs358.77, while high-speed diesel was increased by Rs3.72 to Rs381.77 per litre. Jamaat-i-Islami has separately set a September 10 deadline for withdrawal of the levy and threatened to march on Islamabad if its demand is not accepted.
The assembly session also saw heated exchanges between MQM-P legislators and the treasury benches over the handling and recording of proceedings. Separately, Deputy Speaker Anthony Naveed introduced the Christian Family Laws Bill 2026, which was referred to the relevant standing committee.
