At least one person was killed and five others injured after gunfire erupted at an event attended by around 3,500 people in the Swiss town of Aarau early Sunday, prompting a major police operation and a search for those responsible.
Aargau cantonal police said some of the injured were in serious condition, but authorities did not immediately provide further details about their identities or the nature of their injuries.
Police launched a large-scale operation following the shooting and were searching for the person or people responsible. No information about potential suspects had been released.
“Possible motives and the exact circumstances of the incident remain unclear,” police said as the investigation continued.
Video published by Swiss newspaper Blick, reportedly recorded near the scene, appeared to capture around 10 gunshots.
Authorities urged residents and members of the public to stay away from the affected area while emergency and security operations remained underway.
A Swiss military Super Puma helicopter was also deployed over the wider Aarau area as part of the response, according to Swiss emergency news outlet BRK News.
Aarau, the capital of Switzerland’s Aargau canton, lies approximately 40 kilometres west of Zurich.
