The federal detention centre in Miami where social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate are being held has experienced problems with cooling and water supplies in recent months, according to the US Bureau of Prisons.
The facility, known as Federal Detention Center Miami, has also experienced a confrontation involving detainees and staff, the agency said.
Andrew Tate, 39, and his brother Tristan, 38, were arrested in Miami on July 18 following an extradition request from Britain, where they face rape charges. The brothers, who hold both US and British citizenship, have denied wrongdoing.
Lawyers representing the Tates have complained about what they describe as harsh conditions in solitary confinement.
Andrew Tate has also used posts on X during his detention to claim that he was forced to drink unclean water that made him ill, deprived of sleep by screaming inmates in neighbouring cells and denied a daily hour of exercise.
US prosecutors said in an August 10 court filing that the brothers were being held in the facility’s Special Housing Unit for their own safety, separating them from the general prison population.
Prosecutors rejected suggestions that their detention conditions were unconstitutional.
“While FDC Miami is not a Marriott, the Tates’ conditions of confinement are reasonable, constitutional and within BOP’s discretion,” prosecutors wrote.
The brothers remain in US custody as proceedings continue over Britain’s request for their extradition.
