US Representative Ilhan Omar comfortably won the Democratic primary in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District on Tuesday, securing more than 80% of the vote, according to US media projections.
Omar, a fourth-term Democrat whose district is centred on Minneapolis, defeated four challengers to secure her party’s nomination for another term in Congress.
With more than 95% of ballots counted, unofficial results showed Omar receiving 122,640 votes, according to the New York Times.
Her nearest challengers were Julie Trang Le, a former federal prosecutor, with 10,201 votes, and Latonya T. Reeves, who received 9,131. Abena McKenzie and Nate Schluter were also candidates in the Democratic contest.
CBS News projected Omar as the winner with more than 80% of votes cast.
In the Republican primary, John Nagel was projected to win the nomination with 52.1% of the vote.
Omar will now advance to the general election as the Democratic candidate for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.
