Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman called on Monday for the creation of a “conducive environment” to strengthen relations with India, as Dhaka seeks to stabilise ties with its largest neighbour while addressing longstanding bilateral concerns.
Rahman made the remarks during his first meeting with Dinesh Trivedi, India’s new High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
According to a statement from the Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Office, Rahman emphasised the need to improve conditions for advancing bilateral relations between the neighbouring countries.
The comments come six months into Rahman’s government and reflect Dhaka’s efforts to improve relations with New Delhi following a period of tensions after the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.
One of the most politically sensitive issues between the two countries remains Hasina’s continued presence in India, over which Bangladesh has pressed New Delhi.
Rahman has previously expressed support for maintaining constructive relations with India, but Monday’s remarks marked his clearest public emphasis so far on the need to create conditions that could enable closer cooperation.
The meeting comes as both governments seek to manage outstanding differences while maintaining engagement on their broader bilateral relationship.
