Four Killed in Tourist Helicopter Crash in Rio de Janeiro

Jarida Report

Four people were killed after a helicopter crashed in a forested area of Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, according to local authorities.

The city’s fire department said the pilot and three passengers died in the crash, while efforts to formally identify the victims were continuing.

Colombian Consul General to Brazil Diana Paez said three of those killed were believed to be Colombian tourists. She said forensic teams were facing difficulties identifying some of the victims because of the severity of the fire following the crash.

Videos shared on social media showed flames at the crash site, prompting the deployment of specialised firefighting and rescue teams.

Emergency crews also faced difficulties reaching the wreckage because the helicopter went down in a remote and heavily forested area.

The aircraft was operated by a company offering scenic helicopter flights for tourists and crashed near Vista Chinesa, a popular viewpoint overlooking Rio de Janeiro and the surrounding coastline.

Authorities have yet to announce the cause of the crash, and an investigation into the incident is expected.
