US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he had cancelled a planned military strike against Iran after Tehran and several Middle Eastern countries requested more time to finalize the framework of a peace agreement, adding that Israel had also agreed to pause military action.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the parties had agreed on the broad parameters of a potential deal, which he said would include the immediate and full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and measures to eliminate what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat.
Trump said he called off the planned strike “for the future benefit of the world and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran,” but stressed that the decision depended on the parties reaching an agreement quickly.
“The USA is locked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran, at levels of military strength and power not seen since World War II,” Trump wrote.
He added that Israel had also committed to holding off on military action while negotiations continue, concluding: “Get to work, everybody, and get it DONE.”
