Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Strikes China’s Qinghai Province

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Qinghai province in western China early on Tuesday, according to Germany’s GEOFON seismic monitoring network.

The earthquake occurred at 0334 GMT, with its epicentre located at 99.54°E, 35.36°N.

GEOFON said the quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), a depth that can result in stronger ground shaking near the epicentre.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, injuries or damage, and Chinese authorities had not issued any official assessment in the immediate aftermath of the quake.
