Director Christopher Nolan’s epic adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey made a blockbuster debut at the global box office, earning $264.1 million during its opening weekend, Universal Pictures said on Sunday.
The film generated $124.5 million in ticket sales across the United States and Canada, topping both the domestic and international box office charts, according to industry tracker Rentrak.
Based on the ancient Greek epic poem, the film stars Matt Damon as the legendary Greek hero Odysseus and follows his perilous journey home after the Trojan War.
The Odyssey marks Nolan’s first feature film since the critically acclaimed 2023 blockbuster Oppenheimer, which won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
“There’s just palpable excitement across the domestic market this weekend for The Odyssey,” said Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic theatrical distribution.
According to Orr, the film attracted a broad audience, with half of all ticket buyers falling between the ages of 18 and 34, reflecting strong appeal among younger moviegoers.
