Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Friday condemned the latest US sanctions on Cuba, accusing Washington of reviving a “new and more dangerous version of McCarthyism” through what he described as a campaign against the global “radical left.”
In a post on X, Díaz-Canel claimed that transnational far-right alliances are being promoted in a manner that “recalls Hitlerite fascism” and Operation Condor, the Cold War-era campaign carried out across parts of Latin America during the 1970s and 1980s.
The Cuban leader said the current political climate reflected a modern form of McCarthyism, referring to the anti-communist campaigns in the United States during the 1950s that targeted suspected communist sympathisers.
He questioned whether accusations against left-wing groups were being used as a pretext to justify “new abuses and greater aggression.”
Díaz-Canel argued that the “real danger for humanity” lies in what he described as the “philosophy of dispossession” driving the actions of the transnational far right.
